Philosophy Blog

Hello! My name is Leila Sakoulis and I am currently a junior at BCDS.
I first became interested in philosophy when my mom read a book called How To Think Like a Woman by Regan Penaluna. She loved it so much she recommended it to my sister and I. My sister, immediately read through the whole book and got to discussing with our mom. After listening to their discussions and wonderings I felt compelled (and a little left out) enough to read the book for myself. I was immediately drawn to the focus on women, especially since all of the philosophers I had heard about were male. The experience of reading through the book opened up the world of philosophy to me, proving it to be more accessible then I realized.
A few months later, I took a class which allowed students to pick their own topic to focus on, and write a research paper on for the term. After running through a few options I remembered a conversation I had with my dad at the dinner table. He was telling me about the ancient Greek philosophers and their grievances with the Sophists as they made their way through Athens during the emergence of democracy. After doing some further research, I decided to write my paper on the topic and thoroughly enjoyed the research and writing process. In fact, I believe it is the most engaged I have ever been with a topic and quickly found myself doing my own research and about different philosophical findings and ideas. I love the different perspectives and interesting conversations brought to the table through philosophy. As a result, I made this blog to share my own opinion pieces as well as articles and ideas I find on different philosophical topics.
